About Zavesca
Overview
Zavesca contains miglustat and comes as capsules taken by mouth. It is used on its own to treat adults with mild to moderate type 1 Gaucher disease when enzyme replacement therapy is not a treatment option. It works by reducing the production of certain fatty substances, so the remaining activity of the deficient enzyme can break them down more effectively.

Mild to moderate type 1 Gaucher disease in adults, used alone when enzyme replacement therapy is not a treatment option.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include diarrhea, weight loss, stomach pain, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, constipation, dry mouth and loss of appetite. Other common effects include headache or migraine, shaking (tremor), dizziness, weakness, vision problems, leg or muscle cramps, back pain, heaviness in the arms and legs, memory loss, unsteady walking, tingling or prickling sensations, low platelet counts and menstrual changes. Contact your doctor if you develop tingling or prickling sensations, weakness or unsteady walking, as these may indicate peripheral nerve problems (peripheral neuropathy). Also contact your doctor about tremor, persistent diarrhea or weight loss. Your doctor should check nerve function before treatment and every six months during treatment, and monitor platelet counts. Mild reductions in platelets, which help blood clot, were observed in some patients without associated bleeding.

Before taking this medicine
The FDA label lists no contraindications for Zavesca. Caution and monitoring are needed for: - Peripheral neuropathy (nerve problems): a neurological assessment is recommended before treatment and every six months during treatment. - Tremor: the prescriber may need to adjust or stop treatment if tremor persists. - Diarrhea and weight loss: evaluation for an underlying gastrointestinal condition is recommended if usual measures, such as dietary changes, do not help. - Reduced platelet counts: platelet monitoring is recommended. Mild reductions without associated bleeding were observed in some patients. Zavesca may harm an unborn baby, based on animal data. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you receive imiglucerase. Taking Zavesca with imiglucerase may cause imiglucerase to be cleared from the body faster. This finding is uncertain because only a small number of patients were studied and their imiglucerase doses varied.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
