About Veltassa

Overview

Veltassa contains patiromer, a potassium binder supplied as powder in sachets for oral suspension. It treats hyperkalemia (high blood potassium) in adults and children aged 12 years and older. It binds potassium in the digestive tract so more potassium leaves the body in stools, lowering potassium levels in the blood. It should not be used as an emergency treatment for life-threatening hyperkalemia because it takes time to work.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include constipation, low magnesium levels in the blood, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort and gas. Low magnesium levels and worsening problems with the movement of food and waste through the stomach and intestines are important warnings. Contact your doctor if you are told your magnesium is low or if bowel movement problems worsen.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Veltassa if you have had an allergic reaction to Veltassa or any of its ingredients. Caution is needed if you have problems with movement through the stomach or intestines, as these may worsen, or low blood magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia).

Interactions

Veltassa can bind to other medicines taken by mouth, reducing their absorption and making them less effective. Take other oral medicines at least 3 hours before or 3 hours after Veltassa, except those known not to have a clinically important interaction. Ask your doctor which of your medicines need this separation.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original sachet until you use it, away from direct light and moisture. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
