About Syprine
Overview
Syprine is a prescription medicine containing trientine hydrochloride, supplied as capsules. It treats Wilson’s disease in people who can no longer take penicillamine because of intolerable or life-threatening side effects. It works by binding copper to help remove excess copper from the body. Syprine and penicillamine are not interchangeable.
What it treats
Wilson’s disease in patients who cannot continue penicillamine because of intolerable or life-threatening side effects.
Safety information
Side effects
The label does not identify which side effects are common, and clinical experience with Syprine is limited. Reported side effects include iron deficiency and muscle spasms. Other potentially serious reported effects include systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), dystonia (involuntary muscle contractions) and myasthenia gravis, a condition that causes muscle weakness. Contact your doctor if you develop these effects. In a small study of four patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, a condition Syprine is not indicated to treat, reported effects included heartburn, stomach pain and tenderness, skin thickening, cracking and flaking, anemia, stomach inflammation, mouth ulcers, loss of appetite, feeling unwell, cramps, muscle pain and weakness. Black, tarry stools and rhabdomyolysis (serious muscle breakdown) were also reported and warrant prompt medical attention. It was not established whether Syprine caused the reactions in this study.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Syprine if you are allergic to trientine hydrochloride or any other ingredient in the product.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about any mineral supplements you take, including iron. Mineral supplements should generally be avoided because they may reduce Syprine absorption. Iron and Syprine can each reduce the absorption of the other. If iron is needed for iron deficiency, your doctor may recommend a short course taken separately from Syprine. Food and milk can also interfere with Syprine absorption. Take Syprine on an empty stomach and separately from other medicines, food and milk. Ask your doctor how to space them apart.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
