About Somavert

Overview

Somavert contains pegvisomant, a medicine used to treat acromegaly when surgery or radiation therapy has not worked well enough or is not appropriate. It blocks growth hormone from attaching to its receptors on cells, lowering blood levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). The goal of treatment is to bring IGF-1 levels into the normal range.

What it treats

Acromegaly in patients who have not responded adequately to surgery or radiation therapy, or for whom these treatments are not appropriate. The treatment goal is to bring blood insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels into the normal range.

Safety information

Side effects

Commonly reported side effects include infection, pain, nausea, diarrhea, abnormal liver test results, flu-like symptoms and injection-site reactions. Serious side effects that warrant contacting a doctor include low blood sugar in people with diabetes, liver toxicity and allergic reactions affecting the whole body. Blood glucose should be monitored in people with diabetes, and their diabetes medicines may need adjustment by their doctor. Liver toxicity may require more frequent liver tests or stopping Somavert under medical supervision. A buildup of fatty tissue at injection sites can also occur.

When to call your doctor

• Seek immediate medical attention for a serious allergic reaction. • Contact your doctor promptly if you have low blood sugar, especially if you have diabetes. • Contact your doctor promptly if blood tests show abnormal liver results.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

The supplied FDA label lists no contraindications for Somavert (pegvisomant). Conditions requiring caution include: • Diabetes: Blood glucose should be monitored because low blood sugar may occur. Your prescriber may need to reduce your diabetes medicines. • Liver toxicity: More frequent liver tests and/or stopping Somavert may be needed. • Systemic hypersensitivity (an allergic reaction affecting the body): Close monitoring is needed when restarting Somavert in patients who have experienced this. • Premenopausal women should be advised of the potential for an unintended pregnancy.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you use insulin, oral medicines for diabetes or opioids. If you have acromegaly and diabetes, careful monitoring may be needed, and your doctor may need to reduce your diabetes medicine. Opioid use may affect how much Somavert is needed to adequately lower IGF-1 levels; your prescriber will decide whether an adjustment is needed.
