About Sandostatin

Overview

Sandostatin contains octreotide acetate, a medicine that acts like the natural hormone somatostatin. It is used to reduce growth hormone and IGF-1 levels in people with acromegaly when surgery, pituitary radiation and bromocriptine have not worked adequately or cannot be used. It also treats severe diarrhea and flushing associated with metastatic carcinoid tumors, and profuse watery diarrhea caused by VIP-secreting tumors. It works by reducing the release of growth hormone and other hormones involved in these symptoms.

What it treats

• Acromegaly, to reduce growth hormone and IGF-1 levels when surgery, pituitary irradiation and bromocriptine have not worked adequately or cannot be used. • Metastatic carcinoid tumors, to control associated severe diarrhea and flushing. • VIP-secreting tumors (VIPomas), to treat associated profuse watery diarrhea.

Safety information

Side effects

In patients with acromegaly, common side effects include gallbladder abnormalities, a slow heartbeat, diarrhea, loose stools, nausea, abdominal discomfort, high blood sugar and an underactive thyroid. In other patients, gallbladder abnormalities are the most common side effects. Contact your doctor if you develop a slow or irregular heartbeat, gallstones or related complications, low or high blood sugar, or thyroid problems. Serious disturbances in the heart’s electrical signals, including complete heart block, can occur. Also contact your doctor about new or worsening fatty stools, changes in stool color, loose stools, abdominal bloating or weight loss. These may indicate reduced absorption of dietary fats and need assessment for problems with pancreatic function. Changes in vitamin B12 levels can also occur.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for an unusually slow or irregular heartbeat. - Contact your doctor promptly for new or worsening greasy or discoloured stools, loose stools, abdominal bloating or weight loss.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Sandostatin if you are allergic to octreotide acetate or any of its components. Use with caution if you have heart problems, particularly a slow heartbeat, an irregular heartbeat or problems with the heart’s electrical conduction. Heart monitoring may be considered during intravenous treatment, and heart medicines may need adjustment. Periodic monitoring for gallstones is recommended. Treatment should be stopped if gallstone complications are suspected. Blood glucose should be monitored because low or high blood sugar can occur; diabetes treatment may need adjustment. Thyroid levels should also be checked periodically because an underactive thyroid can occur. Tell your prescriber about new or worsening fatty or discoloured stools, loose stools, abdominal bloating or weight loss. These symptoms require assessment for reduced pancreatic enzyme function and poor fat absorption. Women who have not reached menopause should be advised of the potential for an unintended pregnancy.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take cyclosporine, insulin, oral medicines for diabetes, beta-blockers or bromocriptine. These medicines require monitoring and may need dose adjustments when used with octreotide. Also tell your doctor if you receive lutetium Lu 177 dotatate. Octreotide must be stopped before each treatment; your doctor will advise you on the timing.

Storage

Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light. Do not freeze, and use immediately once opened. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
