About Omegaven
Overview
Omegaven contains fish oil triglycerides and is given by infusion into a vein. It provides calories and fatty acids for children with parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis (PNAC), a condition involving reduced bile flow associated with intravenous nutrition. It works by supplying fats the body can use for energy and to support cell structure and function. Omegaven is not indicated to prevent PNAC.

Safety information
Side effects
The most common side effects, reported in more than 15% of patients, are vomiting, agitation, a slow heartbeat, pauses in breathing and viral infection. Contact a doctor promptly if side effects occur, particularly breathing problems, a slow heartbeat, signs of an allergic reaction or infection, or a sudden worsening of condition. Serious risks include fat overload syndrome, refeeding syndrome, high blood triglycerides and aluminum toxicity. The risk of aluminum toxicity is higher in people with impaired kidney function, including premature infants. Rapid infusion in newborns and infants has been associated with severe breathing distress, excess acid in the blood and death. The infusion must be stopped if an allergic reaction occurs. Routine blood tests are recommended to monitor for complications, including essential fatty acid deficiency.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Omegaven must not be used in anyone with: • A known allergy to fish or egg protein, or any ingredient in Omegaven. • A severe bleeding disorder, because it may affect how platelets clump together. • A severe disorder of fat metabolism with blood triglyceride levels above 1,000 mg/dL. Particular caution is needed in newborns and infants: rapid infusion of intravenous fat emulsions has been associated with acute breathing difficulties, excess acid in the blood and death. People with impaired kidney function, including premature infants, are at increased risk of aluminum toxicity. Patients should be monitored for allergic reactions, infections, fat overload syndrome, refeeding syndrome and high triglyceride levels. The infusion must be stopped if an allergic reaction occurs. Routine laboratory monitoring is recommended, including checks for essential fatty acid deficiency.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take antiplatelet medicines or anticoagulants (blood thinners). Longer bleeding times have been reported in people taking these medicines with oral omega-3 fatty acids. If you receive Omegaven alongside these medicines, your doctor should periodically monitor your bleeding time.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light. Do not freeze. Prepared infusions are handled by the treating clinic. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
