About Lokelma

Overview

Lokelma contains sodium zirconium cyclosilicate, a potassium binder used to treat hyperkalemia (high blood potassium) in adults. It binds potassium in the digestive tract so more potassium leaves the body in stool, lowering potassium levels in the blood. Lokelma should not be used as an emergency treatment for life-threatening hyperkalemia because it does not act quickly enough.

- Hyperkalemia (high blood potassium) in adults. Not for emergency treatment of life-threatening hyperkalemia because it has a delayed onset of action.

Safety information

Side effects

The most common side effect is mild to moderate edema (swelling). Other important risks include gastrointestinal problems in people with conditions that affect movement through the stomach or intestines, and low blood potassium in people receiving hemodialysis. Contact your doctor if you develop swelling or gastrointestinal problems, or if you are told your blood potassium is low.

When to call your doctor

- Contact your doctor if you develop swelling (edema).

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

The FDA label lists no contraindications for Lokelma. Caution is needed in people with gastrointestinal motility disorders (problems with movement through the stomach or bowel), because of the risk of gastrointestinal adverse effects. Other warnings include edema (swelling caused by fluid buildup) and hypokalemia (low blood potassium) in people receiving hemodialysis. Lokelma may appear like an imaging agent on abdominal X-rays because it blocks X-rays.

Interactions

Lokelma can temporarily make the stomach less acidic, changing how some medicines taken by mouth are absorbed. This may affect how well they work or their safety. In general, other oral medicines should be taken at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after Lokelma. Spacing is not needed if your doctor has confirmed that a medicine’s absorption is not affected by changes in stomach acidity. Tell your doctor if you take furosemide, atorvastatin, dabigatran or tacrolimus. In studies, taking these medicines at the same time as Lokelma increased exposure to furosemide and atorvastatin and decreased exposure to dabigatran and tacrolimus.

Dosing

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original sachet until you use it, away from direct light and moisture. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
