About Galafold

Overview

Galafold contains migalastat, present as migalastat hydrochloride, and is used to treat adults with confirmed Fabry disease who have a GLA gene variant considered amenable to treatment based on laboratory testing. It works by stabilising an enzyme called alpha-galactosidase A, helping it reach the parts of cells where it breaks down certain fatty substances. Galafold received accelerated FDA approval based on reduced GL-3 accumulation in certain kidney cells; continued approval may depend on confirmatory trials verifying clinical benefit.

What it treats

Fabry disease in adults with a confirmed diagnosis and a GLA gene variant shown by laboratory testing to be amenable to treatment with Galafold.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include headache, inflammation of the nose and throat, urinary tract infection, nausea and fever. These were reported in at least 10% of patients.
