Before taking this medicine

Do not take cabergoline if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, a known allergy to ergot derivatives, a history of heart valve disease, or a history of fibrosis (scarring) around the heart, in the lungs or their lining, or in the tissues behind the abdominal cavity. Before treatment, your clinician should assess your heart, including an echocardiogram to check the valves. Repeat heart scans and monitoring are needed during treatment. Report chest pain, shortness of breath, persistent cough, leg swelling, flank pain or abdominal tenderness, as these may indicate heart problems or fibrosis. Treatment must be stopped if certain new valve abnormalities, inflammation around the heart or fibrosis develop. Cabergoline can cause a drop in blood pressure when standing, particularly if you also take medicines that lower blood pressure. Blood pressure should be checked before and during treatment. Take care when getting up from sitting or lying down, and report dizziness or lightheadedness. Other medicines associated with heart valve problems require a careful assessment of benefits and risks. Tell your clinician about new or increased urges to gamble, spend money, eat compulsively or engage in sexual activity, especially if these urges are difficult to control. Treatment may need to be changed or stopped. Cabergoline should not be used to prevent or stop normal milk production after childbirth because of the risk of serious adverse reactions. If pregnancy occurs during treatment, your clinician should reassess the benefits and risks and stop treatment if the risks to you or the fetus outweigh the benefits to you.
