About Cystadane
Overview
Cystadane contains betaine anhydrous and comes as a powder that is mixed with water and taken by mouth. It is used to treat homocystinuria in children and adults. It acts as a methylating agent, supplying methyl groups to help lower high levels of homocysteine in the blood.
What it treats
Cystadane is used to lower elevated blood homocysteine levels in children and adults with homocystinuria, including: • Cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) deficiency • 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deficiency • Cobalamin cofactor metabolism (cbl) defects
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort. Serious side effects include increased methionine levels in the blood and cerebral edema (brain swelling) in patients with CBS deficiency. Contact your doctor if you have CBS deficiency and your methionine levels rise. Your doctor should monitor these levels during treatment. Brain swelling requires urgent medical attention.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
The label lists no contraindications for Cystadane. People with cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) deficiency require caution. Cystadane may worsen high blood levels of methionine, and swelling of the brain (cerebral edema) has been reported. Blood methionine levels should be monitored and kept below 1,000 micromol/L through dietary changes and, if needed, a prescriber-directed dose reduction.
