About Prednisolone Tabs
Overview
Prednisolone tablets are a prescription steroid medicine. They are used for certain hormonal disorders, inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, and severe allergies that have not responded to usual treatment. Prednisolone works as a synthetic version of an adrenal steroid called a glucocorticoid.
What it treats
- Certain hormone disorders, including adrenal insufficiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and noninfectious thyroid inflammation. - Short-term add-on treatment for flare-ups of rheumatic conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, bursitis and acute gouty arthritis. - Lupus, systemic dermatomyositis and acute rheumatic carditis during flare-ups or, in selected cases, as maintenance treatment. - Certain severe skin conditions, including pemphigus, severe psoriasis and exfoliative dermatitis. - Severe allergies that have not responded adequately to conventional treatment, including allergic rhinitis, asthma and allergic dermatitis. - Severe allergic or inflammatory eye conditions and certain respiratory diseases, including symptomatic sarcoidosis. - Certain blood disorders, including autoimmune hemolytic anemia and low platelet counts in adults. - Palliative management of leukemia and lymphoma in adults, and acute leukemia in children. - Certain cases of nephrotic syndrome, and critical periods of ulcerative colitis or regional enteritis. - Acute flare-ups of multiple sclerosis.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include fluid retention, potassium loss, muscle weakness, loss of muscle mass, abdominal bloating, headache, dizziness, increased sweating, facial redness, menstrual changes, easy bruising, thin or fragile skin, and slower wound healing. The label does not state how often these occur, so they cannot be classified as common. Contact a doctor if you develop serious side effects, including: - High blood pressure or congestive heart failure in susceptible people. - Stomach or intestinal ulcers, which may cause bleeding or a hole in the digestive tract; inflammation of the pancreas; or ulcers in the food pipe. - Osteoporosis, spinal or other bone fractures, bone tissue death in the hip or shoulder, or steroid-related muscle disease. - Seizures or increased pressure inside the skull with swelling around the optic nerve, usually after treatment. - Cataracts, increased pressure in the eye, glaucoma, or bulging eyes. - Reduced adrenal and pituitary gland function, particularly during injury, surgery or illness. - Reduced ability to handle blood sugar, previously hidden diabetes becoming apparent, or increased need for diabetes medicines. - Slowed growth in children or Cushing-like changes caused by excess corticosteroid effects. The label also lists increased protein breakdown, which can lead to loss of body protein.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take prednisolone if you have a systemic fungal infection (a fungal infection inside the body).

Storage
