About Firazyr
Overview
Firazyr contains icatibant (as acetate) and is supplied in a pre-filled syringe. It is used to treat acute attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in adults aged 18 years and older. It works by blocking the action of bradykinin, a substance thought to cause the swelling, inflammation and pain associated with HAE attacks.

Safety information
Side effects
The most common side effects are injection site reactions, reported in 97% of patients in clinical trials. Other common side effects include fever, increased liver enzymes (transaminases), dizziness and rash. The label also warns that attacks affecting the throat (laryngeal attacks) require immediate medical attention, even after treatment with Firazyr. This is a warning about the attack, not a side effect of the medicine.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
The label lists no contraindications for Firazyr. If it is used to treat an attack affecting the larynx (voice box), seek immediate medical attention after treatment. Older adults have higher exposure to icatibant, but no differences in safety or effectiveness have been identified compared with younger patients.
