About Forteo

Overview

Forteo contains teriparatide, a laboratory-made version of the active part of human parathyroid hormone, and is given by injection under the skin. It treats osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and increases bone mass in men with primary osteoporosis or osteoporosis linked to low sex hormone levels. It also treats osteoporosis associated with ongoing systemic glucocorticoid treatment in men and women; these uses are for people at high risk of fracture or who have not responded to or cannot tolerate other osteoporosis treatments. It works by stimulating new bone formation, increasing bone mass and strength.

What it treats

- Osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at high risk of fracture, or when other available osteoporosis treatments have failed or are not tolerated. It reduces the risk of spinal and non-spinal fractures in these women. - Primary or hypogonadal osteoporosis in men at high risk of fracture, or when other available osteoporosis treatments have failed or are not tolerated, to increase bone mass. - Osteoporosis associated with sustained systemic glucocorticoid treatment in men and women at high risk of fracture, or when other available osteoporosis treatments have failed or are not tolerated.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include joint pain, pain and nausea. Each was reported in more than 10% of patients. Serious reactions and risks that warrant contacting a doctor include: • Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, swelling beneath the skin and hives. Stop treatment if an allergic reaction occurs and seek urgent medical care for a severe reaction. • Osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. Forteo should be avoided in people at increased risk, including those with certain bone diseases, cancer involving the bones or previous radiation treatment involving the skeleton. • High blood calcium and worsening calcium deposits in the skin. Forteo should be avoided in people with an underlying disorder causing high blood calcium. Treatment should be stopped if previously stable calcium deposits in the skin worsen. • Worsening kidney stones in people with active or recent stones. • A temporary drop in blood pressure on standing, which may occur when treatment begins. • Risk of digoxin toxicity in people taking digoxin.

When to call your doctor

- Get medical help immediately for trouble breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or hives. - Seek medical attention right away if you faint or feel faint when standing up. - Contact your doctor right away if existing calcium deposits in your skin become worse.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Forteo if you have had a severe allergic reaction to teriparatide or any of its inactive ingredients. Allergic reactions reported include anaphylaxis, angioedema (swelling under the skin) and hives. If signs of an allergic reaction occur, stop treatment and seek medical care. Forteo must be stopped permanently after a severe allergic reaction. Forteo should be avoided in people at increased risk of osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer), including those with: • Bones that are still growing. • Metabolic bone diseases, including Paget’s disease. • Cancer that has spread to the bones or a history of cancer in the skeleton. • Previous external-beam or implant radiation therapy involving the skeleton. • Inherited conditions that increase osteosarcoma risk. Avoid Forteo if you have an underlying condition that causes high blood calcium. Treatment should be stopped if previously stable calcium deposits in the skin worsen. Active or recent kidney stones require careful assessment of the benefits and risks, as Forteo may worsen them. A temporary drop in blood pressure on standing may occur when treatment begins. If pregnancy occurs, stopping treatment should be considered. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment. Forteo should be avoided in children because of their higher baseline risk of osteosarcoma; safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take digoxin. Forteo may temporarily raise blood calcium levels, which may increase the risk of digoxin toxicity.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use and how long it may be kept at room temperature afterwards. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
