About Tymlos
Overview
Tymlos is a prescription medicine containing abaloparatide, given as an injection under the skin using a pre-filled pen. It treats osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and is used to increase bone density in men with osteoporosis who are at high risk of fracture or have not responded to, or cannot tolerate, other available osteoporosis treatments. It works by stimulating bone-building cells to form new bone.
What it treats
- Osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at high risk of fracture, or when other available osteoporosis treatments have failed or cannot be tolerated. - Osteoporosis in men at high risk of fracture, or when other available osteoporosis treatments have failed or cannot be tolerated, to increase bone density.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects reported in postmenopausal women include increased calcium in the urine, dizziness, nausea, headache, a pounding or racing heartbeat, tiredness, upper abdominal pain and a spinning sensation (vertigo). In men, common side effects include redness, swelling or pain at the injection site, dizziness, joint pain, bruising, nausea, diarrhoea, bloating, abdominal pain and bone pain. Serious reactions include severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, swelling beneath the skin (angioedema) and hives. Stop Tymlos and seek immediate medical help if an allergic reaction occurs. A severe allergic reaction requires permanent discontinuation. Other important risks include a drop in blood pressure when standing, high blood calcium, increased calcium in the urine and kidney stones. Contact your doctor if symptoms develop after an injection; sit or lie down if you experience symptoms of low blood pressure. The label also warns about osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. Tymlos should be avoided in people at increased risk, including those whose bones are still growing, those with certain bone diseases such as Paget’s disease, cancer involving the bones or a history of skeletal cancer, previous radiation treatment involving the skeleton, or inherited conditions that increase this risk. Tell your doctor if any of these apply.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Tymlos if you have had a severe allergic reaction to abaloparatide or any of its inactive ingredients. Reported reactions include anaphylaxis, swelling under the skin, difficulty breathing and hives. Stop treatment if an allergic reaction occurs. Tymlos must be stopped permanently after a severe allergic reaction. Tymlos should be avoided in people at increased risk of osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer), including those with: • Growth plates that have not yet closed. • Metabolic bone diseases, including Paget’s disease. • Cancer that has spread to the bones or a history of bone cancer. • Previous external-beam or implant radiation therapy involving the bones. • Inherited disorders that increase the risk of osteosarcoma. It should also be avoided in people with high blood calcium or an underlying condition that causes it, such as primary hyperparathyroidism. Tymlos can cause a drop in blood pressure on standing. Sit or lie down if symptoms develop after an injection. Urine calcium should be monitored if high urine calcium or current urinary tract stones are suspected.

Storage
