About Actonel

Overview

Actonel (risedronate sodium) is a bisphosphonate medicine. It is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis after menopause and osteoporosis caused by glucocorticoid medicines. It is also used to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis and to treat Paget’s disease. It works by slowing the activity of cells that break down bone.

What it treats

- Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. - Treatment to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis. - Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis caused by glucocorticoid medicines. - Treatment of Paget’s disease.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include back pain, joint pain, abdominal pain and indigestion. Serious side effects reported include irritation of the upper digestive tract, worsening low blood calcium, damage to the jawbone (osteonecrosis), severe bone, joint or muscle pain, and unusual fractures, including thighbone fractures. Contact a doctor if you develop new thigh or groin pain. Stop taking Actonel and contact a doctor if you develop new or worsening upper digestive symptoms or severe bone, joint or muscle pain. Rarely reported reactions include swelling beneath the skin (angioedema), widespread rash, blistering skin reactions, and severe skin reactions called Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Seek urgent medical attention for these reactions. Eye inflammation has also been reported rarely and warrants contacting a doctor.

When to call your doctor

- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or a widespread rash with blistering or peeling skin. - New or worsening upper stomach pain or indigestion. - Severe bone, joint or muscle pain. - New thigh or groin pain, which needs assessment for a possible fracture. - Eye inflammation.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Actonel if you have: • A condition that delays emptying of the esophagus (the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach), such as narrowing or achalasia. • An inability to sit or stand upright for at least 30 minutes. • Low blood calcium. • A known allergy to Actonel or any of its ingredients. Do not take Actonel while receiving Atelvia, which contains the same active ingredient. Actonel is not recommended for people with severe kidney impairment (creatinine clearance below 30 mL/min) and is not indicated for children. Stop taking it if pregnancy is recognized. Low blood calcium must be corrected before treatment because Actonel may worsen it. Irritation or injury to the upper digestive tract can occur; follow the prescribed administration instructions and stop taking Actonel if new or worsening symptoms develop. Stop treatment if severe bone, joint or muscle pain occurs. Jawbone damage (osteonecrosis) and unusual fractures, including thighbone fractures, have been reported. New thigh or groin pain needs assessment to rule out a fracture; your prescriber should review whether treatment should continue or be interrupted.

Interactions

Calcium supplements, antacids and other oral medicines containing certain minerals can reduce the amount of Actonel your body absorbs. Tell your doctor if you take any of these products.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
