About Zovirax

Overview

Zovirax is a cream containing acyclovir, an antiviral medicine. It is used to treat recurrent cold sores in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older with a normally functioning immune system. It works by blocking an enzyme the herpes simplex virus needs to copy its DNA.

What it treats

Recurrent cold sores (herpes labialis) in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older with healthy immune systems.

Safety information

Side effects

The most common side effects are skin reactions where Zovirax cream is applied. Irritation and contact sensitisation (an allergic skin reaction) may occur. Contact dermatitis and eczema have also been reported. Serious allergic reactions, including angioedema (swelling beneath the skin) and anaphylaxis, have been reported. Seek urgent medical attention if a serious allergic reaction occurs.

When to call your doctor

• Seek medical attention immediately for sudden swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or trouble breathing, possible signs of a serious allergic reaction.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Zovirax Cream if you have a known allergy to acyclovir, valacyclovir or any ingredient in the cream. Use only on recurrent herpes simplex lesions on the outside of the lips and face. Do not apply it in the eyes, inside the mouth or nose, or on other mucous membranes. The cream may cause irritation or an allergic skin reaction.

Interactions

No drug interactions have been identified in clinical use when Zovirax cream is used alongside other medicines, including those applied to the skin. Very little acyclovir is absorbed into the bloodstream from the cream, so interactions affecting the whole body are unlikely.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C with the cap closed, away from direct light and heat. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
