About Zovirax

Overview

Zovirax contains acyclovir, an antiviral medicine. Acyclovir tablets are used to treat shingles and chickenpox, and to treat first episodes and manage recurrent episodes of genital herpes. Acyclovir works by blocking the copying of viral DNA, which stops herpes viruses from multiplying.

What it treats

- Shingles (herpes zoster), for acute treatment. - Genital herpes, for treatment of initial episodes and management of recurrent episodes. - Chickenpox (varicella).

Safety information

Side effects

Commonly reported side effects in oral acyclovir trials included nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache and feeling generally unwell. Serious reactions reported after approval include severe allergic reactions, serious skin reactions, kidney failure, liver inflammation, blood disorders and nervous system problems. Their frequency cannot be estimated from the reports. Seek urgent medical help for a severe allergic reaction, swelling, a severe rash, seizures or reduced consciousness. Contact a doctor promptly for confusion, hallucinations, unusual agitation, difficulty with balance or speech, marked drowsiness, changes in vision, kidney pain, blood in the urine or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Nervous system effects may be particularly marked in older adults or people with kidney impairment. Other reported effects include dizziness, tremor, tingling, fever, swelling of the limbs, muscle pain, itching, hives, sensitivity to sunlight and hair loss.

When to call your doctor

- Severe allergic symptoms, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing. - A severe rash with blistering or peeling skin. - New confusion, hallucinations, seizures or reduced consciousness. - Yellowing of the skin or eyes. - Blood in the urine or pain around the kidneys.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Zovirax if you are allergic to acyclovir or valacyclovir.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
