About Zonegran
Overview
Zonegran is a prescription antiseizure medicine containing zonisamide, available as capsules. It is used alongside other antiseizure medicines to treat partial seizures in adults with epilepsy. Its exact way of working is unknown, but it may help reduce seizure activity by affecting sodium and calcium channels in nerve cells.

Side effects
The most common side effects of Zonegran include sleepiness, loss of appetite, dizziness, problems with coordination, agitation or irritability, and difficulty remembering or concentrating. Other reported side effects include fatigue, slowed thinking, nausea or vomiting, and weight loss. These effects, along with several of the common side effects above, led some patients to stop treatment in clinical studies. Many were related to the dose.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Zonegran if you have a known allergy to zonisamide or sulfonamides.
Interactions
Use caution when taking Zonegran with alcohol or medicines that slow brain activity (CNS depressants), as zonisamide can cause drowsiness and problems with thinking, mood or behaviour. These combinations have not been evaluated in clinical studies. Taking Zonegran with other carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, such as topiramate, acetazolamide or dichlorphenamide, may worsen excess acid in the blood (metabolic acidosis) and increase the risk of kidney stones or high ammonia levels in the blood. Tell your doctor if you take any of these medicines. If they are used together, your doctor should monitor for new or worsening metabolic acidosis.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
