Aptiom

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Aptiom if you are allergic to eslicarbazepine acetate or oxcarbazepine. Aptiom requires monitoring for suicidal thoughts or behaviour, serious skin reactions, and serious allergic reactions, including DRESS, anaphylaxis and angioedema. Treatment should be stopped if another cause for these reactions cannot be established. Sodium levels should be monitored in people at risk of low blood sodium or who develop symptoms. Dizziness, problems with walking or coordination, sleepiness, fatigue, problems with thinking and changes in vision also require monitoring. Use caution when driving or operating machinery. Aptiom should be stopped if jaundice or significant liver injury develops. Blood-related adverse reactions may also require stopping treatment. Any withdrawal should be managed by the prescriber; stopping abruptly can increase seizure frequency or cause prolonged seizures. During pregnancy, Aptiom may harm the unborn baby, based on animal studies.
