About Zofran
Overview
Zofran (ondansetron) is a prescription medicine used to prevent nausea and vomiting. It is used with certain cancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments, and to prevent nausea and vomiting after surgery. It blocks serotonin receptors called 5-HT3 receptors, which are involved in triggering vomiting, although its exact action is not fully understood.
What it treats
- Prevention of nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy with a high or moderate risk of these effects, including initial and repeat courses of moderately emetogenic chemotherapy. - Prevention of nausea and vomiting caused by radiotherapy involving the whole body or the abdomen. - Prevention of nausea and/or vomiting after surgery.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include headache, constipation and diarrhea. Tiredness or feeling generally unwell is also common when ondansetron is used to prevent chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting. Low blood oxygen levels are among the most common side effects reported when it is used to prevent nausea and vomiting after surgery. Serious risks that warrant prompt medical attention include severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and narrowing of the airways; heart rhythm changes, including QT prolongation and torsade de pointes; serotonin syndrome, particularly when taken with other medicines that affect serotonin; and reduced blood flow to the heart. Stop taking ondansetron and seek immediate medical help if a severe allergic reaction or serotonin syndrome is suspected. Ondansetron can also mask worsening bowel inactivity or stomach swelling after abdominal surgery or during chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting. Contact a doctor promptly if bowel activity decreases.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Zofran (ondansetron) if you are allergic to ondansetron or any tablet ingredient, or if you are taking apomorphine. Using ondansetron with apomorphine can cause a severe drop in blood pressure and loss of consciousness. Ondansetron should be avoided in people with congenital long QT syndrome. Extra caution and ECG monitoring are needed if you have abnormal electrolyte levels, heart failure or heart rhythm problems, or take other medicines that prolong the QT interval. Ondansetron can cause serious heart rhythm disturbances. Serotonin syndrome has been reported, particularly when ondansetron is used with other medicines that affect serotonin. If it is suspected, ondansetron should be stopped and treatment started. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and narrowing of the airways, also require stopping treatment and prompt medical care. Reduced blood flow to the heart has been reported after oral use; patients should be monitored or advised about its signs and symptoms. Ondansetron may also mask worsening bowel blockage or stomach swelling after abdominal surgery or during chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting. Monitoring for reduced bowel activity is important, especially in people at risk of bowel obstruction.
