About Motilium
Overview
Motilium is a prescription medicine containing domperidone, used to relieve nausea and vomiting. It is supplied as tablets. It works by blocking dopamine signals involved in nausea and vomiting and helping food move through the stomach.

Side effects
Dry mouth is a common side effect of Motilium (domperidone). Other possible side effects include headache, drowsiness, diarrhoea, breast tenderness, unexpected breast milk production and changes in menstrual periods. Domperidone can cause serious heart rhythm problems, which can be fatal. Seek urgent medical help for a fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, seizures, or signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat or difficulty breathing. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop unusual or uncontrolled movements.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Motilium should not be taken by anyone allergic to domperidone or any tablet ingredient. It must not be used in people with: • A prolactin-producing pituitary tumour (prolactinoma). • Gastrointestinal bleeding, a blockage or a perforation, where stimulating gut movement could be harmful. • Moderate or severe liver impairment. • A prolonged QT interval, significant electrolyte disturbances, a slow heartbeat or an underlying heart condition such as congestive heart failure. Domperidone must not be taken with medicines that prolong the QT interval or strongly inhibit its breakdown by the enzyme CYP3A4, because these combinations can increase the risk of serious heart rhythm problems. Extra caution is needed in older adults and people with kidney impairment. All other medicines should be reviewed for interactions before treatment. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding requires an individual assessment of the benefits and risks by the prescriber.
Interactions
Domperidone can interact with medicines that affect heart rhythm or slow its breakdown in the body, increasing the risk of serious heart rhythm problems. Some combinations must be avoided. Tell your doctor if you take: • Antibiotics such as clarithromycin or erythromycin. • Antifungal medicines such as ketoconazole or itraconazole. • HIV medicines such as ritonavir. • Heart rhythm medicines such as amiodarone or sotalol. • Certain antidepressants or antipsychotics, such as citalopram or haloperidol. • Medicines that lower potassium levels, including some diuretics (“water tablets”). Antacids and medicines that reduce stomach acid can reduce domperidone absorption. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to use these alongside Motilium. Have your doctor or pharmacist check all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, vitamins and herbal supplements before starting or stopping them.
