Zanaflex

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Zanaflex if you are taking a strong CYP1A2 inhibitor or have had an allergic reaction to tizanidine or any ingredient in Zanaflex. Reported allergic reactions include anaphylaxis and angioedema (serious swelling). Zanaflex should not be used with other alpha-2 adrenergic agonists. Zanaflex can cause low blood pressure, particularly when taken with blood pressure medicines. Monitoring for signs and symptoms is needed. Liver enzyme monitoring is also needed because Zanaflex can cause liver injury; treatment should be stopped if liver injury occurs. Zanaflex can cause sedation that interferes with everyday activities. Alcohol and other medicines that slow the central nervous system can add to this effect. Hallucinations may occur, and stopping treatment should be considered if they develop. Use requires caution in older adults because the medicine is cleared from the body more slowly. During pregnancy, Zanaflex may harm the unborn baby, based on animal studies.
