Postmarketing reports indicate that the effects of DYSPORT and all botulinum toxin products may spread from the area of injection to produce symptoms consistent with botulinum toxin effects. These may include asthenia, generalized muscle weakness, diplopia, blurred vision, ptosis, dysphagia, dysphonia, dysarthria, urinary incontinence and breathing difficulties. These symptoms have been reported hours to weeks after injection. Swallowing and breathing difficulties can be life threatening and there have been reports of death. The risk of symptoms is probably greatest in children treated for spasticity but symptoms can also occur in adults treated for spasticity and other conditions, particularly in those patients who have underlying conditions that would predispose them to these symptoms. In unapproved uses and in approved indications, cases of spread of effect have been reported at doses comparable to or lower than the maximum recommended total dose.

About Dysport
Overview
Dysport is a prescription medicine containing abobotulinumtoxinA, a botulinum toxin type A. It treats cervical dystonia in adults and spasticity in people aged 2 years and older. It is also used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows in adults younger than 65. It works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that signals muscles to contract.

- Cervical dystonia in adults. - Temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows caused by muscle activity in adults younger than 65. - Spasticity in patients aged 2 years and older.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects vary by the condition treated: For cervical dystonia: muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, injection-site pain or discomfort, tiredness, headache, muscle and joint pain, voice changes and eye problems. For glabellar (frown) lines: nose and throat infections, headache, injection-site pain or reactions, upper respiratory tract infections, eyelid swelling or drooping, sinusitis, nausea and blood in the urine. Dry eye may also occur. For adult spasticity: muscle weakness with upper-limb treatment; falls, muscle weakness and pain in the arms or legs with lower-limb treatment. For children treated for spasticity: upper respiratory tract infections and sore throat with upper-limb treatment; nose and throat infections, cough and fever with lower-limb treatment. Serious risks include spread of the toxin’s effects beyond the injection site, allergic reactions, and swallowing or breathing difficulties. Seek immediate medical attention for difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing. Contact a doctor if you suspect an allergic reaction. Existing disorders affecting nerves and muscles may increase the effects of treatment. Contact a doctor if dry-eye symptoms persist after treatment for frown lines.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Dysport if you are allergic to any botulinum toxin product, cow’s milk protein or any ingredient in Dysport, or if you have an infection at a planned injection site. Dysport may contain trace amounts of cow’s milk protein. Extra caution is needed if you have a neuromuscular disorder, as this may increase the effects of treatment. Older adults also require care because they more often have other medical conditions and take other medicines. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing. Dry eye may occur when Dysport is used to treat frown lines between the eyebrows; persistent symptoms may need assessment by an eye specialist. Dysport’s potency units are not interchangeable with those of other botulinum toxin products. The prescribed dose and treatment frequency must not be exceeded.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you use aminoglycoside antibiotics, muscle relaxants, or other medicines that affect signals between nerves and muscles. These may increase Dysport’s effects and require close monitoring. Anticholinergic medicines may have stronger effects throughout the body when used with Dysport. Also tell your doctor if you receive any other botulinum toxin treatment. The effects of using different botulinum toxins during Dysport treatment are unknown.
