About Vimpat
Overview
Vimpat is a prescription medicine containing lacosamide, available as tablets. It treats partial-onset seizures in patients aged 1 month and older and is used with other seizure medicines for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients aged 4 years and older. Its exact action is not fully understood, but laboratory studies suggest it helps calm overactive nerve cells by changing how certain sodium channels work.

Side effects
Common side effects of Vimpat (lacosamide) include dizziness, headache, double vision, nausea and sleepiness. Side effects reported in children are similar to those in adults. Contact a doctor promptly for suicidal thoughts or behaviour, problems with coordination or balance, fainting, or heart rhythm problems. A serious allergic reaction called DRESS can affect several organs and also warrants prompt medical attention. Do not stop Vimpat suddenly. It should be withdrawn gradually under your prescriber’s guidance to reduce the risk of more frequent seizures.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
The supplied FDA label lists no contraindications for Vimpat. Caution and close monitoring are needed if you have a condition that increases the risk of abnormal heart rhythms or take medicines that affect the heart’s electrical conduction. An ECG is recommended before treatment and after adjustment to a stable maintenance dose. Vimpat may cause dizziness, problems with coordination or fainting. Patients should be monitored for suicidal thoughts or behaviour. Vimpat may cause a serious hypersensitivity reaction called DRESS, which can affect multiple organs. It should be discontinued if no other cause for the reaction is found. During pregnancy, Vimpat may harm the unborn baby, based on animal studies. Do not stop treatment suddenly; it should be withdrawn gradually under medical supervision to reduce the risk of increased seizures.
