About Ventolin

Overview

Ventolin HFA is an inhaler containing albuterol sulfate; albuterol is also called salbutamol. It is used to treat or prevent bronchospasm (tightening of the airways) in adults and children aged 4 years and older with reversible obstructive airway disease. It is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm in this age group. It works by relaxing the muscles around the airways, helping them open up.

Side effects

Common side effects listed for Ventolin HFA include throat irritation, viral respiratory infections, inflammation of the upper airways, cough, and muscle or bone pain. Serious reactions include sudden worsening of breathing after use (paradoxical bronchospasm), which can be life-threatening, and immediate allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Stop using Ventolin HFA and seek urgent medical help if these occur. Effects on the heart and circulation, low blood potassium, and changes in blood sugar may also occur and warrant contacting a doctor. If you need Ventolin HFA more often than usual, contact your doctor, as this may indicate worsening asthma. Excessive use can be fatal; do not use more than prescribed.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Ventolin HFA if you have a history of an allergic reaction to any of its ingredients. Use with caution if you have heart or blood vessel disease, a seizure disorder, or sensitivity to medicines that stimulate the sympathetic nervous system. Ventolin HFA may cause cardiovascular effects, low blood potassium or changes in blood sugar. Stop using it immediately and seek medical help if breathing suddenly worsens after use or an immediate allergic reaction occurs. Needing it more often than usual may mean your asthma is worsening and requires a treatment review. It is not a substitute for corticosteroids. Do not use more than prescribed; excessive use can be fatal.

Interactions

Tell your doctor about other medicines you use, especially: - Other short-acting sympathomimetic bronchodilator inhalers: these should not be used together with albuterol (salbutamol). - Other adrenergic medicines: combining them with albuterol may cause harmful effects on the heart and circulation. - Beta-blockers: these may reduce albuterol’s effect on breathing and cause severe narrowing of the airways. - Non-potassium-sparing diuretics (“water tablets”): albuterol may worsen low potassium levels or changes in the heart’s electrical activity associated with these medicines. - Digoxin: albuterol may lower digoxin levels in the blood. Your doctor may consider monitoring these levels. - Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and tricyclic antidepressants: these require extreme caution because they may increase albuterol’s effects on blood vessels.
