About Tremfya

Overview

Tremfya is a prescription medicine containing guselkumab, a monoclonal antibody. It treats moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in people who are candidates for systemic treatment or light therapy, and active psoriatic arthritis; for both conditions, patients must be aged 6 years or older and weigh at least 40 kg. It also treats moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease in adults. It works by blocking interleukin-23 (IL-23), a protein involved in inflammation and immune responses, reducing the release of substances that promote inflammation.

What it treats

- Moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in adults and children aged 6 years and older who weigh at least 40 kg and are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy. - Active psoriatic arthritis in adults and children aged 6 years and older who weigh at least 40 kg. - Moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis in adults. - Moderately to severely active Crohn’s disease in adults.

Side effects

Common side effects vary by the condition being treated: For plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis: upper respiratory infections, headache, injection-site reactions, joint pain, bronchitis, diarrhea, stomach or intestinal infections, fungal skin infections, and herpes simplex infections. For ulcerative colitis: injection-site reactions, joint pain, upper respiratory infections, headache, stomach or intestinal infections, tiredness, fever, and rash. For Crohn’s disease: respiratory infections, abdominal pain, injection-site reactions, headache, tiredness, joint pain, diarrhea, and stomach or intestinal infections. Serious risks include severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, infections, tuberculosis (TB), and liver injury. Seek emergency medical help for a severe allergic reaction. Contact your doctor promptly if you suspect an infection, TB, or liver injury. Tremfya may increase the risk of infections. Your doctor should check for TB before treatment and monitor for signs of active TB during and after treatment. Liver blood tests may also be needed to monitor for liver injury.

When to call your doctor

- Seek immediate medical attention for a serious allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis. - Contact your doctor promptly if you develop signs of infection, such as fever.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Tremfya if you have ever had a serious allergic reaction to guselkumab or any of its other ingredients. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, may occur. Tremfya may increase the risk of infections. Treatment should not start if you have a clinically important active infection until it has cleared or been adequately treated. If such an infection develops during treatment, Tremfya should be stopped until it clears. You should be checked for tuberculosis (TB) before starting treatment and monitored for signs and symptoms of active TB during and after treatment. Liver injury has been reported. For ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, liver enzymes and bilirubin should be checked before treatment, for at least the first 16 weeks, and periodically afterward. For plaque psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis, these checks may be needed before and during treatment if clinically indicated. Treatment should be interrupted if drug-induced liver injury is suspected, until this has been ruled out. Avoid live vaccines while using Tremfya.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use and how long it may be kept at room temperature afterwards. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
