About Trandate
Overview
Trandate tablets contain labetalol hydrochloride, an alpha- and beta-blocker used to manage high blood pressure. They may be used alone or with other medicines for high blood pressure. Labetalol works by blocking certain alpha and beta receptors involved in blood pressure control.
What it treats
Trandate tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), alone or with other blood pressure medicines.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects reported with Trandate tablets include dizziness, nausea, tiredness, indigestion and a stuffy nose. Other reported effects include headache, a spinning sensation, sexual difficulties, rash, swelling, vision changes and low blood pressure when standing. Tingling, especially of the scalp, can also occur. Serious reported side effects include liver inflammation or damage, jaundice, a slow heartbeat, problems with the heart’s electrical signals, fainting, narrowing of the airways and difficulty passing urine, including an inability to empty the bladder. Contact a doctor promptly if these occur. Rare allergic reactions have included hives, itching, swelling beneath the skin and breathing difficulty. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty or a severe allergic reaction. Other less common effects include muscle cramps or muscle damage, dry eyes, temporary hair loss and lupus. Liver blood test abnormalities have also been reported.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Trandate tablets if you have asthma, a history of obstructive airway disease, overt heart failure, heart block greater than first degree, cardiogenic shock, a severely slow heartbeat, or any condition associated with severe and prolonged low blood pressure. Do not take them if you have previously had an allergic reaction to any ingredient in the product.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take any of the following medicines while using Trandate (labetalol hydrochloride): • Tricyclic antidepressants: tremor has been reported more often when these are taken with labetalol, although an interaction has not been confirmed. • Beta-agonist bronchodilators: labetalol may reduce their ability to open the airways. • Cimetidine: this can increase the amount of labetalol available in the body, so your prescriber should take special care when adjusting treatment. • Nitroglycerin: using it with labetalol may cause additional blood pressure lowering in people with angina. Labetalol also reduces the reflex increase in heart rate caused by nitroglycerin. • Verapamil-type calcium channel blockers: these require caution when used with labetalol. • Digitalis glycosides: combining these with labetalol can increase the risk of a slow heartbeat. Tell your anaesthetist if you receive labetalol. Halothane anaesthesia used with intravenous labetalol can increase blood pressure lowering, substantially reduce the amount of blood the heart pumps and increase pressure in the large veins near the heart.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
