About Norvasc

Overview

Norvasc tablets contain amlodipine, a long-acting calcium channel blocker. It is used to treat high blood pressure, chronic stable angina and angina caused by spasms in the heart’s arteries. It works by reducing calcium entry into muscle cells in blood vessel walls, helping the vessels relax and reducing the work the heart has to do.

What it treats

- High blood pressure (hypertension). - Chronic stable angina. - Vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal’s or variant angina). - Coronary artery disease confirmed by angiography, in patients without heart failure and with an ejection fraction of at least 40%.

Safety information

Side effects

The most common side effect of Norvasc (amlodipine) is swelling (edema), which becomes more common at higher doses. Other common side effects include tiredness, nausea, abdominal pain and sleepiness. Serious effects include low blood pressure that causes symptoms, particularly in people with severe narrowing of the aortic valve. Contact a doctor if this occurs. Worsening angina (chest pain) and a heart attack can occur after starting Norvasc or increasing the dose, particularly in people with severe obstructive coronary artery disease. Seek urgent medical attention for worsening chest pain or a suspected heart attack.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for new or worsening chest pain, especially after starting Norvasc.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Norvasc if you have a known allergy to amlodipine. Extra caution is needed if you have severe aortic stenosis (narrowing of the aortic valve), as low blood pressure with symptoms can occur, although a sudden drop is unlikely. Chest pain (angina) may worsen, and a heart attack can occur after starting Norvasc or increasing the dose, particularly in people with severe obstructive coronary artery disease. Severe liver impairment and older age require particular care with prescribing. The effects in children younger than 6 years are not known.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take simvastatin. Its dose must be limited when taken with Norvasc, so your doctor should review your prescription.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
