About Atacand

Overview

Atacand tablets contain candesartan cilexetil, which is converted to candesartan in the body, and belong to a group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). It is used to treat high blood pressure in adults and children aged 1 to under 17 years. It is also used to treat heart failure, helping reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospital admission for heart failure. It works by blocking the effects of angiotensin II, a substance that narrows blood vessels and stimulates the release of aldosterone, a hormone.

Side effects

Headache and dizziness were the most common side effects that led adults treated for high blood pressure to stop Atacand. Low blood pressure, abnormal kidney function and high blood potassium were the most common side effects that led adults treated for heart failure to stop treatment. These require medical attention; contact your doctor if they occur. Your doctor should monitor your kidney function and potassium levels and watch for signs of low blood pressure.

When to call your doctor

- Contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant. Atacand must be stopped as soon as pregnancy is detected because it can seriously harm or cause the death of an unborn baby. - Contact your doctor if you develop dizziness or headache. These are reported side effects of Atacand.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Atacand if you are allergic to candesartan or any of the product’s ingredients. Do not take it with aliskiren if you have diabetes. Children under 1 year of age must not receive Atacand for high blood pressure. Atacand requires monitoring for signs and symptoms of low blood pressure, as well as checks of kidney function and potassium levels. If you are breastfeeding, either breastfeeding or Atacand must be stopped; discuss this with your prescriber.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take lithium, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or other medicines that act on the renin–angiotensin system. Atacand can increase lithium levels in the blood and the risk of lithium toxicity. NSAIDs may increase the risk of kidney problems and reduce Atacand’s blood pressure-lowering effect. Combining Atacand with other medicines that block the renin–angiotensin system increases the risk of kidney problems, low blood pressure and high potassium levels.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
