About TOBI
Overview
TOBI contains tobramycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic supplied in ampules as a solution for inhalation through a nebulizer. It is used to manage cystic fibrosis in adults and children aged 6 years and older who have Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. It works by disrupting the production of proteins that bacteria need, leading to bacterial cell damage and death.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include increased cough, sore throat, increased mucus coughed up from the lungs, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, reduced lung function, voice changes, altered taste and rash. Contact a doctor if you develop tightening of the airways or difficulty breathing, ringing in the ears, hearing loss or worsening muscle weakness. Coughing up blood also warrants medical attention. Serious risks include kidney damage and impaired nerve-to-muscle function, which may require breathing support. Aminoglycosides, the antibiotic class that includes tobramycin, can harm an unborn baby; contact your doctor if you are pregnant or become pregnant during treatment.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use TOBI if you have a known allergy to tobramycin or any other aminoglycoside antibiotic. TOBI can cause tightening of the airways (bronchospasm). Ringing in the ears and hearing loss have also been reported. Aminoglycosides can cause kidney damage and may worsen muscle weakness in people with neuromuscular disorders. These problems require medical assessment and may require stopping treatment. Use during pregnancy requires caution because aminoglycosides can harm the unborn baby.
Interactions
TOBI should not be used at the same time as, or in sequence with, other medicines that can harm the nerves, kidneys or hearing. Tell your doctor about other medicines you are taking or have recently taken. Using TOBI with ethacrynic acid, furosemide, urea or intravenous mannitol is not recommended because these medicines may increase aminoglycoside toxicity.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light. Do not freeze, and use immediately once opened. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
