About Vancocin
Overview
Vancocin capsules contain vancomycin, a glycopeptide antibiotic. It treats diarrhea associated with Clostridioides difficile and inflammation of the intestines caused by Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains, in adults and children. It acts against bacteria. Taken by mouth, Vancocin is not effective for other types of infections.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include nausea, abdominal pain and low blood potassium. Serious side effects include kidney damage, which can occur during treatment or after it has ended. The risk is higher in older adults, and kidney function should be monitored. Hearing damage can also occur; contact your doctor if you notice hearing changes. Severe skin reactions can occur. Stop taking Vancocin and contact a doctor immediately at the first sign of a skin rash, blisters or sores affecting moist body linings, such as inside the mouth.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Vancocin if you have a known allergy to vancomycin. Kidney injury can occur during treatment or after it has ended. Kidney function should be monitored, especially in people over 65, even if their kidney function was normal before treatment. Blood levels of vancomycin may also need monitoring in some patients treated for active C. difficile-associated diarrhea. Hearing damage has been reported, and hearing checks may be appropriate in some cases. Stop taking Vancocin at the first sign of a skin rash, sores on the moist linings of the body, such as inside the mouth, or blisters, as these may signal a severe skin reaction. Vancocin capsules are not effective for infections other than staphylococcal enterocolitis and C. difficile-associated diarrhea. Use without a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection is unlikely to help and increases the risk of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Storage
