About Thymoglobulin
Overview
Thymoglobulin contains anti-thymocyte globulin (rabbit), an immunosuppressive medicine supplied as a powder in a vial for preparation and intravenous administration. It is used with other immunosuppressive medicines to prevent and treat acute rejection in adults and children receiving a kidney transplant. Its exact action is not fully understood, but it may suppress the immune response by reducing the number of circulating T cells and changing how they function.

Prevention and treatment of acute rejection in adults and children receiving a kidney transplant, used alongside other medicines that suppress the immune system.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include urinary tract infection, abdominal pain, high blood pressure, nausea, shortness of breath, fever, headache, anxiety and chills. Blood tests may show increased potassium levels and low platelet or white blood cell counts. Seek immediate medical help for a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) or a serious reaction during the infusion. Contact your doctor promptly about infections, including infections that return after being inactive, or low blood cell counts. Thymoglobulin can cause anemia and low counts of certain white blood cells and platelets; blood counts need monitoring. Thrombotic microangiopathy, a serious condition affecting small blood vessels, has occurred in kidney transplant patients receiving Thymoglobulin, particularly when used with calcineurin inhibitors. The risk of cancer may also increase.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Thymoglobulin must not be used in people with a history of allergy or anaphylaxis to rabbit proteins or any of its other ingredients. It must also not be used in people with an active short-term or long-term infection when further suppression of the immune system would be unsafe. It should only be used by doctors experienced in immunosuppressive treatment for transplantation. Important precautions include: - Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, and infusion-related reactions can occur. - Low red blood cell, white blood cell or platelet counts can occur, so blood counts must be monitored. - Thrombotic microangiopathy, a condition involving damage and clots in small blood vessels, has occurred in kidney transplant patients, particularly when used with calcineurin inhibitors. - New infections or reactivation of existing infections can occur. Monitoring and preventive anti-infective treatment are needed. - The risk of cancer may increase. - Live attenuated vaccines are not recommended after recent treatment. - Thymoglobulin may interfere with certain antibody-based laboratory tests and transplant compatibility tests.
Interactions
No drug interaction studies have been performed with Thymoglobulin. It can cause the body to make antibodies that also react with other rabbit immune globulins. Tell your doctor if you receive other rabbit immune globulin products.

Storage
