FDA boxed warningSuicidal thoughts and behaviors in pediatric patients 6 years of age and older
All STRATTERA-treated pediatric patients 6 years of age or older should be monitored and observed closely for suicidal thoughts and behavior, clinical worsening, or unusual changes in behavior, especially during the initial months of therapy or at times of dosage changes. Families and caregivers should be advised of the need for close observation and communication with the health care provider. Consider stopping STRATTERA in patients who experience emergent suicidal thoughts and behavior
STRATTERA increased the risk of suicidal ideation in pediatric patients aged 6 years of age and older with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in short-term studies.
About Strattera
Overview
Strattera contains atomoxetine hydrochloride, a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. It is used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and children aged 6 years and older as part of a treatment program that may include psychological, educational and social support. Its exact way of working in ADHD is unknown, but it is thought to reduce the reuptake of norepinephrine, a chemical messenger, by nerve cells.
What it treats
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and children aged 6 years and older, as part of a comprehensive treatment program that may include psychological, educational and social support.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects in children and adolescents include nausea, vomiting, tiredness, reduced appetite, stomach pain and sleepiness. In adults, common side effects include constipation, dry mouth, nausea, reduced appetite, dizziness, difficulty getting or keeping an erection, and difficulty starting urination. Use caution when driving or operating hazardous machinery until you are reasonably certain Strattera does not affect your performance. Serious side effects include severe liver injury and serious heart problems. If you develop jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), stop Strattera and contact a doctor promptly. Strattera must not be restarted if jaundice or blood tests show liver injury. If symptoms suggesting a heart problem develop, stop Strattera and seek prompt medical assessment. Contact your doctor if you develop new psychotic or manic symptoms, new or worsening aggression or hostility, or difficulty passing urine. A prolonged erection (priapism) requires prompt medical attention. Strattera can increase blood pressure and heart rate, which should be checked before treatment, after dose increases and periodically during treatment. Growth, including height and weight, should be closely monitored in children and adolescents.

When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Strattera if you: • Are allergic to atomoxetine or any other ingredient in Strattera. • Are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), or stopped taking one within the past 14 days. • Have narrow-angle glaucoma. • Have or have previously had pheochromocytoma. • Have a severe heart or blood vessel disorder that could worsen with an increase in blood pressure or heart rate. Before treatment, your prescriber should assess your heart health. Strattera generally should not be used in children with serious heart abnormalities, heart muscle disease or serious abnormal heart rhythms. Adults with clinically significant heart abnormalities may also need to avoid it. Blood pressure and heart rate should be checked before treatment, after dose increases and periodically during treatment. If symptoms suggesting heart disease develop, stop Strattera and seek prompt medical assessment. Strattera must be stopped and not restarted if jaundice or laboratory evidence of liver injury occurs. Moderate or severe liver impairment increases exposure to atomoxetine. People who break down atomoxetine slowly because of their CYP2D6 metabolism may also have higher exposure and a greater risk of side effects. New psychotic or manic symptoms may require stopping treatment. Monitor for new or worsening aggression or hostility. Difficulty passing urine or inability to empty the bladder may occur. Seek prompt medical attention for a persistent erection (priapism). Children’s height and weight should be closely monitored.
Interactions
Do not take Strattera with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), including linezolid or intravenous methylene blue, or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI. This combination can cause serious, sometimes fatal reactions, including very high body temperature, muscle stiffness or jerking, unstable vital signs, and severe agitation progressing to delirium or coma. Tell your doctor if you take: • Strong CYP2D6 inhibitors, which can increase the amount of atomoxetine in your body. • Blood pressure medicines or medicines that raise blood pressure, including dopamine and dobutamine. More frequent blood pressure checks may be needed. • Albuterol or other beta2 agonists. Atomoxetine can strengthen the effects of albuterol given systemically, such as by mouth, increasing heart rate and blood pressure. More frequent blood pressure and heart rate checks may be needed.
