About Carbolith
Overview
Carbolith contains lithium carbonate, a mood-stabilizing medicine. It is used on its own to treat acute manic and mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder in adults and children aged 7 years and older. It is also used for ongoing maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder in the same age group. Exactly how lithium works to stabilize mood is unknown.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects in adults include a fine hand tremor, increased urination, mild thirst, nausea and general discomfort when treatment begins. In children and adolescents aged 7–17, common side effects include nausea or vomiting, increased urination, thyroid abnormalities, tremor, increased thirst, dizziness, rash or skin inflammation, problems with coordination or walking, decreased appetite and blurred vision. Serious side effects that warrant contacting a doctor include lithium toxicity, low blood sodium, chronic kidney damage, an underactive or overactive thyroid, high blood calcium and overactive parathyroid glands. Other serious risks include serotonin syndrome, increased pressure around the brain, and unmasking of Brugada syndrome, a heart rhythm condition. A serious brain disorder with changes in thinking or mental function can occur, particularly when lithium is taken with an antipsychotic. Increased urination can raise the risk of dehydration and lithium toxicity. Prolonged sweating, diarrhea or fever from an infection can increase the risk of low blood sodium and lithium toxicity. Stay hydrated and maintain a normal diet that includes salt. Kidney function, thyroid function and blood calcium need monitoring during treatment.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Carbolith if you have a known allergy to any inactive ingredient in its tablets or capsules. Extra caution and monitoring are needed if you have kidney impairment, increased urination, dehydration or low blood sodium. Prolonged sweating, diarrhea or fever from an infection can increase the risk of low sodium and lithium toxicity. Maintain a normal diet with salt and stay hydrated. Long-term lithium use can cause kidney changes and is associated with high blood calcium and overactive parathyroid glands. Lithium can also cause an underactive or overactive thyroid. Kidney function, thyroid function and blood calcium should be monitored during treatment. Taking lithium with an antipsychotic increases the risk of a syndrome affecting brain function. Regular monitoring for changes in thinking and awareness is needed. Lithium may harm an unborn baby or newborn. Discuss its use during pregnancy with your prescriber.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take diuretics (water pills), NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), renin-angiotensin system antagonists, or metronidazole. These medicines may raise lithium levels in the blood. Your doctor may need to check your lithium levels more often and adjust your treatment. Medicines that increase serotonin activity can raise the risk of serotonin syndrome when taken with lithium. Antipsychotics taken with lithium have been associated with neurological reactions, including movement problems and neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
