About Intuniv XR
Overview
Intuniv XR is a prescription medicine containing guanfacine in an extended-release tablet. It is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), either alone or alongside stimulant medicines. Guanfacine is not a stimulant; it acts on specific receptors in the brain called alpha-2A adrenergic receptors, but exactly how it works in ADHD is not known.

Side effects
Common side effects include sleepiness, tiredness, low energy, low blood pressure, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, trouble sleeping, dry mouth, irritability and a slow heartbeat. Contact a doctor if you experience fainting, a slow heartbeat or symptoms of low blood pressure such as dizziness. Guanfacine can worsen certain problems with the electrical signals that control the heartbeat. Sleepiness and sedation can also be significant and may increase when taken with other medicines that cause sedation. Do not drive or operate heavy equipment until you know how this medicine affects you. Stopping guanfacine suddenly can cause a significant, persistent rise in blood pressure. Brain dysfunction caused by severely high blood pressure has also been reported after stopping. Do not stop treatment without speaking to your prescriber. Your heart rate and blood pressure should be checked before treatment, after dose increases and periodically during treatment. Avoid becoming dehydrated or overheated.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Intuniv XR if you have previously had an allergic reaction to guanfacine, any of the tablet’s inactive ingredients, or another medicine containing guanfacine. Rash and itching have been reported. Extra caution and monitoring are needed if you have low blood pressure, a slow heart rate, fainting, heart block or other heart rhythm conduction problems, heart or blood vessel disease, disease affecting blood vessels in the brain, or chronic kidney failure. Guanfacine can lower blood pressure and heart rate and may worsen certain heart conduction problems. Heart rate and blood pressure should be checked before treatment, after dose increases and periodically during treatment. Avoid dehydration and overheating. Tell your prescriber about other medicines you take, especially those that lower blood pressure or heart rate, affect heart conduction, or cause sedation. Their effects may add to those of guanfacine. Sleepiness and sedation are common; do not drive or operate heavy equipment until you know how this medicine affects you. Do not stop treatment suddenly. Abrupt stopping can cause a significant, persistent rise in blood pressure, and brain dysfunction due to dangerously high blood pressure has been reported. Your prescriber should supervise gradual discontinuation.
Interactions
Medicines that affect the liver enzyme CYP3A4 can change the amount of guanfacine in your body. Ketoconazole and fluconazole can increase guanfacine levels, while rifampin and efavirenz can decrease them. Tell your doctor if you take any of these medicines, as your prescriber may need to adjust your guanfacine treatment.

Dosing

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
