About Stelara

Overview

Stelara contains ustekinumab, a monoclonal antibody medicine. It treats moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults and children aged 6 years and older who are candidates for light therapy or systemic treatment, and active psoriatic arthritis in the same age group. It also treats moderately to severely active Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis in adults and children aged 2 years and older. It works by blocking the activity of two immune-system proteins, IL-12 and IL-23, which are involved in inflammation.

What it treats

- Moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults and children aged 6 years and older who are candidates for phototherapy or systemic therapy. - Active psoriatic arthritis in adults and children aged 6 years and older. - Moderately to severely active Crohn’s disease in adults and children aged 2 years and older. - Moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis in adults and children aged 2 years and older.

Side effects

Common side effects vary by the condition being treated and the stage of treatment: • Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis: nose and throat inflammation, upper respiratory tract infections, headache and tiredness. • Crohn’s disease: vomiting during initial treatment; nose and throat inflammation, injection-site redness, vaginal yeast or other fungal infections, bronchitis, itching, urinary tract infections and sinus infections during maintenance treatment. • Ulcerative colitis: nose and throat inflammation during initial treatment; nose and throat inflammation, headache, abdominal pain, flu, fever, diarrhoea, sinus infections, tiredness and nausea during maintenance treatment. Serious risks include serious infections, severe allergic reactions, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), and pneumonia not caused by infection. Stelara may also increase the risk of cancer. Contact a doctor promptly if a serious infection or any of these conditions is suspected. Severe allergic reactions require immediate medical attention. Treatment must be stopped if a severe or clinically significant allergic reaction occurs, PRES is suspected, or noninfectious pneumonia is confirmed. If a serious or clinically significant infection develops, treatment must be stopped until the infection resolves.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Stelara if you have a clinically significant allergy to ustekinumab or any of its ingredients. Treatment should not begin while you have a clinically important active infection. If a serious or clinically significant infection develops, treatment must be stopped until the infection resolves. You must be evaluated for tuberculosis (TB) before starting treatment. Latent TB must be treated before Stelara is given. Tell your prescriber if you have cancer or a history of cancer: Stelara may increase the risk of cancer, and its safety in these patients has not been evaluated. Avoid live vaccines during treatment. Severe or other clinically significant allergic reactions require immediate discontinuation and medical treatment. Suspected posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), a neurological condition, requires prompt treatment and discontinuation of Stelara. Noninfectious pneumonia has also been reported; if confirmed, Stelara must be stopped and appropriate treatment started.

Interactions

Tell your doctor about all medicines, vitamins, herbal products and supplements you use, especially: • Other biologic medicines or medicines that suppress the immune system, as combining treatments may increase infection risk. • Medicines such as warfarin or ciclosporin, which may need closer monitoring when ustekinumab is started or stopped. • Allergy injections (allergen immunotherapy), as ustekinumab may affect their safety. Live vaccines should not be given during treatment. Discuss any planned vaccinations with your doctor, including BCG vaccination. No specific food interactions are established.
