About Spiriva

Overview

Spiriva Respimat is an inhaler containing tiotropium, a long-acting anticholinergic medicine. It is used for long-term maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), to reduce COPD flare-ups, and for maintenance treatment of asthma in people aged 6 years and older. It works by blocking signals that tighten the muscles around the airways, helping them stay open. It is not for relieving sudden breathing symptoms.

What it treats

- Long-term maintenance treatment of bronchospasm associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and reduction of COPD exacerbations (flare-ups). - Long-term maintenance treatment of asthma in patients aged 6 years and older. Not for relief of sudden bronchospasm.

Side effects

Common side effects reported in people with COPD include sore throat, cough, dry mouth and sinus inflammation. In adults with asthma, common side effects include sore throat, headache, bronchitis and sinus inflammation. Serious side effects include immediate allergic reactions, sudden worsening of breathing after inhalation, worsening narrow-angle glaucoma and worsening difficulty passing urine. Allergic reactions may include swelling, hives, rash, narrowing of the airways or anaphylaxis. Stop using Spiriva Respimat and seek immediate medical help if an immediate allergic reaction or sudden worsening of breathing occurs. Contact a doctor immediately if narrow-angle glaucoma or difficulty passing urine worsens.

When to call your doctor

- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, hives, or a rash after using Spiriva Respimat. - Sudden worsening of breathing or wheezing after using the inhaler. - New or worsening difficulty passing urine, or being unable to pass urine.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Spiriva Respimat if you are allergic to tiotropium, ipratropium or any ingredient in the product. It is not a rescue medicine for sudden breathing problems. Use with caution if you have narrow-angle glaucoma or difficulty emptying your bladder, especially with an enlarged prostate or bladder-neck obstruction. Seek medical advice immediately if these conditions worsen. People with moderate to severe kidney impairment need close monitoring for anticholinergic side effects. Stop using it and seek immediate medical help if you develop an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, itching, hives, rash or breathing difficulty. Stop using it and contact a doctor if breathing suddenly worsens after inhalation.

Interactions

Avoid using Spiriva Respimat with other medicines that contain anticholinergic drugs, as their effects may add together. Ask your doctor whether any of your other medicines contain an anticholinergic.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not pierce or burn the device, even when it is empty. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
