About Solu‑Medrol
Overview
Solu‑Medrol is a prescription corticosteroid medicine containing methylprednisolone sodium succinate, supplied as a powder in a vial for injection. When oral treatment is not feasible, it is used for conditions including severe allergic reactions that have not responded adequately to conventional treatment, certain inflammatory and autoimmune disorders, and acute flare-ups of multiple sclerosis. It works by reducing inflammation.
What it treats
When oral treatment is not feasible, Solu‑Medrol may be used for conditions including: - Severe allergic conditions that have not responded to conventional treatment, including asthma, allergic dermatitis and drug reactions. - Certain severe skin diseases, including pemphigus and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. - Adrenal insufficiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, cancer-related high blood calcium and thyroid inflammation without pus formation. - Critical periods of ulcerative colitis or regional enteritis. - Certain blood disorders, including autoimmune hemolytic anemia and selected low-platelet conditions. - Leukemias and lymphomas, for palliative management. - Acute multiple sclerosis flare-ups and brain swelling associated with brain tumors or craniotomy. - Certain inflammatory eye conditions. - Nephrotic syndrome that is idiopathic or associated with lupus. - Certain lung diseases, including symptomatic sarcoidosis and idiopathic eosinophilic pneumonias. - Acute flare-ups of certain rheumatic disorders, as short-term additional treatment; also dermatomyositis, polymyositis, temporal arteritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. - Selected severe tuberculosis complications, alongside appropriate tuberculosis treatment, and trichinosis affecting the nervous system or heart muscle.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include increased appetite, weight gain, nausea, bloating, headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping, mood changes, acne, increased sweating, bruising, thin or fragile skin, and slower wound healing. The label does not state how often these occur, so they cannot reliably be described as common. Serious reported side effects that warrant contacting a doctor include: - Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and swelling beneath the skin. - Heart rhythm problems, heart failure, cardiac arrest, blood clots, high blood pressure, and fluid in the lungs. - Stomach or intestinal ulcers, bleeding, or perforation; inflammation of the pancreas; and hepatitis. - Reduced resistance to infection. - Raised blood sugar, increased need for diabetes medicines, reduced adrenal gland function, and slowed growth in children. - Fluid retention and potassium loss. - Muscle weakness, loss of muscle mass, osteoporosis, fractures, tendon rupture, and bone damage. - Seizures, depression, other psychiatric disturbances, and increased pressure inside the skull. - Glaucoma, increased eye pressure, and cataracts. Seek emergency medical help for a severe allergic reaction. These are not all the adverse reactions listed in the label.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Solu‑Medrol must not be used in people with a systemic fungal infection or a known allergy to the medicine or any of its ingredients. It must not be injected into the spinal canal (intrathecally), as severe medical events have been reported with this route. It must not be injected into a muscle in people with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. If the vial contains benzyl alcohol as a preservative, it must not be used in premature infants.
Interactions
Solu‑Medrol can interact with other medicines and affect responses to vaccines and skin tests. Discuss the following with your doctor: • Warfarin: its blood-thinning effect may change, so more frequent blood-clotting tests may be needed. • Diabetes medicines: corticosteroids can raise blood sugar, so your treatment may need adjustment. • Amphotericin B and medicines that lower potassium, including some diuretics: potassium levels may fall and need close monitoring. Low potassium can also increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms in people taking digitalis medicines. • Aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): combined use increases the risk of stomach and intestinal side effects. Aspirin requires particular caution in people with low levels of the clotting factor prothrombin. • Cyclosporine: the effects of both medicines may increase. Seizures have been reported with combined use. • Anticholinesterase medicines used for myasthenia gravis: combined use may cause severe weakness. Your doctor may need to review treatment before Solu‑Medrol is started. • Ketoconazole, macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin, and estrogens, including oral contraceptives: these may increase corticosteroid exposure or effects. • Barbiturates, phenytoin, carbamazepine, rifampin and cholestyramine: these may increase corticosteroid breakdown or removal from the body. • Isoniazid: its blood levels may decrease. • Aminoglutethimide: this may reduce corticosteroid-related suppression of adrenal gland function. During prolonged corticosteroid treatment, vaccines may work less well. Corticosteroids may also allow some organisms in live vaccines to multiply more readily. Discuss vaccination timing with your doctor; routine vaccination should be postponed until treatment has ended if possible. Corticosteroids can also reduce reactions to skin tests, which may affect the results.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
