About Sectral
Overview
Sectral contains acebutolol, a beta-blocker medicine. It is used to manage high blood pressure in adults, either alone or with other blood pressure medicines. It also treats ventricular premature beats, which are early heartbeats that start in the heart’s lower chambers. It works by selectively blocking beta receptors involved in the heart’s response to nerve signals.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include tiredness, dizziness, headache, nausea, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, gas and difficulty sleeping. Other reported effects include unusual dreams, depression, rash, more frequent urination, joint or muscle pain, cough, a runny or irritated nose, and vision changes. Contact your doctor if you develop chest pain, swelling, shortness of breath, wheezing, a slow heartbeat or low blood pressure. Heart failure has also been reported. Liver problems have occurred, sometimes with dark urine, fever, loss of appetite, nausea or feeling unwell. These symptoms also warrant contacting your doctor. Systemic lupus erythematosus, an autoimmune condition, has been reported extremely rarely. Other potentially serious effects have been reported with other beta-blockers and are considered possible with Sectral, though they were not listed as observed Sectral reactions in this extract. These include worsening heart block, severe mood or mental changes, allergic reactions with throat spasms or breathing distress, blood disorders, and a blood clot or reduced blood flow affecting the intestines. Seek urgent medical help for breathing distress or throat spasms.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Sectral if you have a persistently very slow heart rate, second- or third-degree heart block, overt heart failure, or cardiogenic shock (when the heart cannot pump enough blood to the body). Older adults need particular caution because more of the medicine may reach the bloodstream. The prescriber should take this into account when deciding treatment.
Interactions
Reserpine and other medicines that reduce catecholamine levels can add to Sectral’s effects, causing a very slow heartbeat or low blood pressure. Close monitoring is needed for dizziness, fainting, near-fainting or a drop in blood pressure when standing. Alpha-adrenergic stimulants, including those in some cold remedies and nasal drops that narrow blood vessels, may cause an excessive rise in blood pressure when used with Sectral. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may reduce its blood-pressure-lowering effect. Digitalis medicines, including digoxin, can further slow the heartbeat and electrical conduction through the heart when combined with Sectral, increasing the risk of a slow heartbeat. Tell your doctor if you take any of these medicines, including non-prescription cold remedies, nasal drops or NSAIDs.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
