About Requip
Overview
Requip contains ropinirole, a medicine in a group called dopamine agonists. It is used to treat Parkinson’s disease and moderate-to-severe primary restless legs syndrome (RLS). It is thought to work by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain, although its exact action in treating these conditions is not known.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of ropinirole include nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, dizziness and weakness. In people treated for Parkinson’s disease, common side effects also include indigestion, leg swelling, viral infections, sweating and headache. Fainting, uncontrolled movements, confusion and hallucinations were also among the common reactions reported in Parkinson’s disease trials. Contact a doctor if you experience sudden sleep during everyday activities, fainting, low blood pressure (including when standing up), hallucinations, confusion, psychotic-like behaviour, new or worsening uncontrolled movements, or difficulty controlling urges or compulsive behaviours. Allergic reactions also warrant medical attention. Other important risks listed in the label include high fever and confusion associated with withdrawal, other withdrawal symptoms, worsening restless legs symptoms or their return in the early morning, tissue scarring (fibrotic complications), and changes affecting the retina of the eye. Contact your doctor if you develop these problems.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Requip (ropinirole) if you have had an allergic reaction to ropinirole or any of its other ingredients. Reactions may include hives, swelling, rash or itching. Caution is needed because ropinirole may cause sudden sleep episodes, sleepiness, fainting or low blood pressure, including when standing up. It may also cause hallucinations, psychotic-like behaviour, or problems controlling impulses or compulsive behaviours. It may cause or worsen involuntary movements (dyskinesia). If you are pregnant, discuss treatment with your prescriber. Based on animal studies, ropinirole may harm an unborn baby.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about medicines that affect the liver enzyme CYP1A2, as they may change how quickly your body clears ropinirole. Your prescriber may need to adjust your treatment. Also let your doctor know if you start or stop hormone replacement therapy (HRT), as this may require an adjustment to your treatment. Dopamine-blocking medicines, including neuroleptics (antipsychotics) and metoclopramide, may reduce how well ropinirole works.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
