Side effects
The supplied amantadine hydrochloride label lists nausea, dizziness or lightheadedness, and difficulty sleeping as the most frequently reported side effects. Other reported effects include dry mouth, constipation, reduced appetite, headache, sleepiness, tiredness, diarrhea, anxiety, irritability, abnormal dreams, and difficulty with balance or coordination. Contact a doctor promptly for hallucinations, confusion, depression, marked changes in mood or behavior, difficulty urinating, swelling of the limbs, or dizziness when standing. Visual disturbances, including reduced vision, sensitivity to light, and swelling or clouding of the cornea, also need prompt medical attention. Seek immediate medical help for suicidal thoughts or a suicide attempt, seizures, severe allergic reactions, serious breathing difficulties, an irregular heartbeat, or loss of consciousness. Serious reactions reported in the label also include heart failure, cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, fluid in the lungs, dangerously reduced white blood cell counts, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Abrupt discontinuation has been reported to trigger confusion, agitation, hallucinations, anxiety, depression, and slurred speech.
