About Neupro

Overview

Neupro is a skin patch containing rotigotine, a dopamine agonist. It is used to treat Parkinson’s disease and moderate-to-severe primary Restless Legs Syndrome. Its exact action in these conditions is unknown, but it is thought to work by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain.

Side effects

Common side effects in people treated for Parkinson’s disease include nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, skin reactions where the patch is applied, dizziness, loss of appetite, trouble falling or staying asleep, excessive sweating, changes in vision, swelling in the limbs, and involuntary movements. In people treated for restless legs syndrome, common side effects include skin reactions where the patch is applied, nausea, trouble falling or staying asleep, sleepiness, and headache. Contact a doctor if you experience sudden sleep episodes during everyday activities, including driving; hallucinations or psychosis; dizziness from low blood pressure when standing or fainting; compulsive behaviours; increased blood pressure or heart rate; weight gain or fluid retention; involuntary movements; or severe skin reactions at the patch site. Neupro contains sodium metabisulfite, which may cause allergic-type reactions in people with sulfite sensitivity. Seek urgent medical help for a serious allergic reaction or a very high fever with confusion, which may occur after sudden stopping or dose reduction. Other serious risks listed in the label include worsening or rebound of restless legs symptoms, withdrawal symptoms, and complications involving scar-like tissue formation. Contact a doctor if restless legs symptoms worsen or symptoms develop after reducing or stopping treatment.

When to call your doctor

- An allergic reaction or a severe skin reaction where the patch is applied. - Falling asleep unexpectedly during everyday activities, including driving. - Fainting or severe dizziness when standing up. - Seeing or hearing things that are not there. - A very high fever or confusion, especially after treatment is suddenly stopped or reduced.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Neupro if you have a known allergy to rotigotine or any component of the patch. It contains sodium metabisulfite, which may cause allergic reactions in people with sulfite sensitivity. Caution is needed because Neupro may cause sleepiness or sudden sleep during everyday activities, including driving. Other risks include hallucinations or psychosis, involuntary movements, dizziness from a drop in blood pressure when standing, fainting, increased blood pressure or heart rate, compulsive behaviours, and patch-site reactions that may be severe. Do not stop Neupro or reduce its dose suddenly without advice from your prescriber, as this may cause a dangerously high fever and confusion. If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, discuss use with your prescriber: animal studies suggest a risk of harm to the unborn baby.

Dosing

Storage

Store below 25°C flat in the original sealed sachet, away from direct light and heat, until you are ready to apply it. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
