About Mirapex

Overview

Mirapex contains pramipexole, a medicine in a group called non-ergot dopamine agonists. Pramipexole tablets are used to treat Parkinson’s disease and moderate-to-severe primary restless legs syndrome (RLS). Pramipexole stimulates dopamine receptors in the brain, although exactly how it works to treat these conditions is not known.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects vary with the condition being treated. In early Parkinson’s disease, they include nausea, dizziness, sleepiness, difficulty sleeping, constipation, weakness and hallucinations. In advanced Parkinson’s disease treated with levodopa, common effects also include a drop in blood pressure when standing, involuntary movements, muscle stiffness or spasms, walking difficulties, accidental injury, unusual dreams, confusion, dry mouth, memory problems and frequent urination. In restless legs syndrome, common effects include nausea, sleepiness, fatigue and headache. Contact your doctor promptly if you experience sudden sleep episodes, significant sleepiness, dizziness when standing, compulsive behaviours or intense urges, hallucinations, psychotic-like behaviour, new or worsening involuntary movements, or changes in posture. Sudden sleep can occur during everyday activities without warning. The risk of hallucinations and psychotic-like behaviour increases with age. The label also identifies muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), retinal problems and withdrawal symptoms as risks.

When to call your doctor

- Suddenly falling asleep during daily activities, especially without warning. - Seeing or hearing things that are not there, or becoming confused. - Intense urges or compulsive behaviours that are difficult to control. - Dizziness when standing up. - New or worsening uncontrolled movements or abnormal changes in posture.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Interactions

Dopamine antagonists, medicines that block dopamine, may reduce the effectiveness of pramipexole. Tell your doctor if you take any of these medicines.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
