About Rebif

Overview

Rebif contains interferon beta-1a, a protein made using recombinant DNA technology. It is used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adults, including clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease and active secondary progressive disease. Exactly how Rebif produces its treatment effects in MS is not known.

Side effects

Common side effects include injection site reactions, flu-like symptoms, abdominal pain, depression, raised liver enzyme levels and changes in blood cell counts. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop depression or thoughts of suicide. Other serious side effects that warrant contacting a doctor include liver injury, severe allergic reactions including anaphylaxis, injection site damage including tissue death, reduced blood cell counts, seizures, blood clots in small blood vessels (thrombotic microangiopathy), and high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs (pulmonary arterial hypertension). Seek emergency medical help for a severe allergic reaction. Blood tests are needed to monitor liver function and blood cell counts. Do not inject into an affected skin area until it has fully healed.

When to call your doctor

- Report symptoms of depression or thoughts of suicide immediately. - Get immediate medical help for a severe allergic reaction. - Get immediate medical help for a seizure. - Contact your doctor immediately for skin sores or tissue damage at an injection site.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Rebif if you have a history of an allergic reaction to natural or recombinant interferon beta, human albumin, or any other ingredient. Conditions requiring caution include depression or suicidal thoughts, liver problems, low blood cell counts, and seizure disorders. Report depression or suicidal thoughts immediately. Liver function tests and complete blood counts should be monitored during treatment. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, require stopping treatment. Do not inject into affected skin until it has fully healed. If several skin lesions develop, injection sites may need to be changed or treatment paused until healing. Rebif must be stopped if thrombotic microangiopathy, a condition involving damage and blood clots in small blood vessels, occurs, or if pulmonary arterial hypertension, high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs, is diagnosed. If you are pregnant, discuss the risks with your prescriber. Human data do not suggest a clear link to major birth defects, but animal studies suggest possible harm to the unborn baby.

Storage
