About Tecfidera

Overview

Tecfidera contains dimethyl fumarate and comes as delayed-release capsules. It is used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adults, including clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease and active secondary progressive disease. Exactly how it works in MS is unknown, but dimethyl fumarate and its breakdown product activate a pathway involved in how cells respond to oxidative stress.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects of Tecfidera include flushing, abdominal pain, diarrhea and nausea. Contact a doctor promptly for serious side effects, including severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis and angioedema), progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), shingles and other serious opportunistic infections, low lymphocyte counts (lymphopenia), liver injury and serious gastrointestinal reactions. Tecfidera must be stopped and not restarted if anaphylaxis or angioedema occurs. It should be withheld at the first sign or symptom suggestive of PML. Your doctor may also interrupt treatment for a serious infection or persistently low lymphocyte counts. Blood tests are needed before and during treatment to monitor lymphocytes and liver function.

When to call your doctor

- Seek immediate medical attention for a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) or swelling beneath the skin (angioedema).

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Tecfidera if you have a known allergy to dimethyl fumarate or any of its other ingredients. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema (swelling), have occurred. If either occurs, stop Tecfidera and do not restart it. Conditions requiring caution include: • Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML): withhold Tecfidera at the first sign or symptom suggesting this condition. • Shingles or other serious opportunistic infections: treatment may need to be withheld until a serious infection has resolved. • Low lymphocyte counts: a complete blood count, including lymphocytes, is needed before treatment, after six months, and every six to twelve months thereafter. Persistently very low counts may require treatment interruption. • Liver injury: liver blood tests are needed before treatment and during treatment when clinically indicated. Tecfidera should be stopped if clinically significant liver injury caused by the medicine is suspected.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
