FDA boxed warningThrombosis, renal dysfunction and acute renal failure
Thrombosis may occur with immune globulin products

Risk factors may include: advanced age, prolonged immobilization, hypercoagulable conditions, history of venous or arterial thrombosis, use of estrogens, indwelling central vascular catheters, hyperviscosity, and cardiovascular risk factors. Thrombosis may occur in the absence of known risk factors
Renal dysfunction, acute renal failure, osmotic nephrosis, and death may occur with immune globulin intravenous (IGIV) products in predisposed patients. Patients predisposed to renal dysfunction include those with any degree of pre-existing renal insufficiency, diabetes mellitus, age greater than 65, volume depletion, sepsis, paraproteinemia, or patients receiving known nephrotoxic drugs.
Renal dysfunction and acute renal failure occur more commonly in patients receiving IGIV products containing sucrose.
PRIVIGEN does not contain sucrose.
For patients at risk of thrombosis, renal dysfunction or failure, administer PRIVIGEN at the minimum dose and infusion rate practicable. Ensure adequate hydration in patients before administration. Monitor for signs and symptoms of thrombosis and assess blood viscosity in patients at risk for hyperviscosity
About Privigen
Overview
Privigen contains human immunoglobulin G (IgG), an antibody preparation made from human plasma and given by intravenous infusion. It treats primary humoral immunodeficiency, chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) in patients aged 15 years and older, and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) in adults. Maintenance treatment for CIDP has not been studied beyond six months. Privigen supplies antibodies against many bacteria and viruses and may also modify immune system activity, although its mechanism is not fully understood.
What it treats
- Primary humoral immunodeficiency (PI). - Chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) in patients aged 15 years and older. - Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) in adults. Maintenance treatment for CIDP has not been studied beyond 6 months.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects vary with the condition being treated. They include headache, tiredness or weakness, nausea, vomiting, chills, raised body temperature, back pain, abdominal pain, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, cough, throat pain, chest pain, pain in the arms or legs, swollen joints, flu-like symptoms, dizziness, hives and rash. High blood pressure, anemia, a low white blood cell count and blood test findings showing red blood cell breakdown have also been reported as common reactions. Contact a doctor promptly about serious reactions, including severe allergic reactions, kidney problems or acute kidney failure, blood clots, red blood cell breakdown and related anemia, severe blood pressure increases, fluid overload, or inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord (aseptic meningitis). Acute lung injury can also occur. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, require emergency medical attention; the risk is greater in people with IgA deficiency who have antibodies against IgA. Other important risks include increased blood protein levels, increased blood thickness and low blood sodium. Privigen is made from human blood and may carry infectious agents.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Privigen if you have: • A history of anaphylaxis or a severe whole-body reaction to human immune globulin. • Hyperprolinemia, because Privigen contains L-proline. • IgA deficiency with antibodies to IgA and a history of hypersensitivity. Extra caution and monitoring are needed if you are over 65 or at risk of kidney failure. People with IgA deficiency and antibodies to IgA are at greater risk of severe allergic reactions. Privigen may cause increased blood protein levels, increased blood thickness, low blood sodium, aseptic meningitis, breakdown of red blood cells and anemia, raised blood pressure, or acute lung injury. Aseptic meningitis is more likely with high doses or rapid infusion. High doses and a non-O blood group increase the risk of red blood cell breakdown. Privigen is made from human blood and may contain infectious agents.
Interactions
Antibodies in Privigen may interfere with the response to live virus vaccines and may cause misleading results in blood tests that check for antibodies. Tell your doctor you are receiving Privigen before having a live virus vaccine or antibody testing.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light. Do not freeze. Prepared infusions are handled by the treating clinic. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
