About Prednisone
Overview
Prednisone tablets contain prednisone, a glucocorticoid medicine in the corticosteroid family. They are used for certain adrenal disorders, short-term additional treatment of arthritis flare-ups, and severe allergies that have not responded adequately to conventional treatment. Other uses include selected inflammatory conditions affecting the skin, eyes or bowel, certain blood disorders, and relief of symptoms in some leukemias and lymphomas.
What it treats
- Certain adrenal and hormonal disorders, including adrenal insufficiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, cancer-related high blood calcium and nonsuppurative thyroiditis. - Short-term add-on treatment for flare-ups of rheumatic conditions, including rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, bursitis and acute gouty arthritis. - Lupus, dermatomyositis or polymyositis, and acute rheumatic carditis during flare-ups or as maintenance treatment in selected cases. - Certain severe skin diseases, including pemphigus, severe psoriasis and exfoliative dermatitis. - Severe allergies that have not responded adequately to conventional treatment, including allergic rhinitis, asthma, contact or atopic dermatitis, and drug hypersensitivity reactions. - Severe allergic or inflammatory eye conditions. - Certain lung diseases, including symptomatic sarcoidosis and aspiration pneumonitis; severe pulmonary tuberculosis only alongside appropriate tuberculosis treatment. - Certain blood disorders, including autoimmune hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia in adults. - Palliative treatment of adult leukemias and lymphomas, and childhood acute leukemia. - Certain forms of nephrotic syndrome without uremia, to increase urine output or reduce protein loss in urine. - Ulcerative colitis and regional enteritis during critical periods. - Tuberculous meningitis with actual or impending subarachnoid blockage, alongside appropriate tuberculosis treatment; trichinosis affecting the nervous system or heart muscle.
Safety information
Before taking this medicine
Do not take prednisone tablets if you have a systemic fungal infection (a fungal infection inside the body) or a known allergy to any ingredient in the tablets.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about all medicines you take and any planned vaccinations or skin tests. Important interactions include: • Diuretics and amphotericin B: potassium levels may fall, requiring close monitoring. Low potassium can increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms in people taking digitalis medicines. • Warfarin: prednisone may alter its blood-thinning effect, so more frequent blood-clotting tests may be needed. • Diabetes medicines: prednisone can raise blood sugar, so your prescriber may need to adjust treatment. • Aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): combined use increases the risk of stomach and intestinal side effects. Stopping prednisone can also increase the risk of salicylate toxicity. • Fluoroquinolone antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin: the risk of tendon rupture may increase, especially in older people. This can occur during or after antibiotic treatment. • Bupropion and cyclosporine: seizures are a concern with combined use. Prednisone and cyclosporine may also increase each other’s effects. • Neostigmine or pyridostigmine: severe weakness can occur in people with myasthenia gravis. Combined treatment requires close supervision because breathing support may be needed. • Macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, indinavir and estrogen-containing medicines, including oral contraceptives: these may increase corticosteroid levels or effects. Ketoconazole may also contribute to adrenal insufficiency when corticosteroid treatment is withdrawn. • Barbiturates, phenytoin, carbamazepine, rifampin and cholestyramine: these may speed corticosteroid breakdown or removal, reducing its effect. • Isoniazid, quetiapine and medicines processed by the liver enzyme CYP3A4: corticosteroids may reduce their levels or effects. • Thalidomide: a severe skin reaction called toxic epidermal necrolysis has been reported with combined use. Prednisone may reduce vaccine responses and allow some organisms in live vaccines to multiply more readily. Discuss vaccination timing with your doctor; routine vaccination should be deferred until corticosteroid treatment has stopped if possible. Prednisone may also suppress skin-test reactions.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
