Before taking this medicine

Do not take Parlodel if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, a history of heart valve disorders, or a history of fibrosis (scarring) around the heart, in the lungs or their lining, or behind the abdominal cavity. Do not take it if you are allergic to bromocriptine, any tablet ingredient or other ergot alkaloids. Use is not recommended in people with severe psychotic disorders or in those taking other medicines associated with heart valve damage. Avoid use during breastfeeding after childbirth or to prevent or stop normal milk production; this use has been associated with high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, seizures and death. Treatment requires monitoring for heart valve problems and fibrosis, including heart ultrasound scans, and blood pressure checks. Low blood pressure, including a drop when standing, can occur. Tell your prescriber about new or increased gambling, sexual urges, uncontrolled spending or compulsive eating. If daytime sleepiness or sudden sleep occurs, do not drive or perform dangerous activities. People with large prolactin-secreting tumours need visual field monitoring. Rapidly worsening visual field loss requires evaluation by a neurosurgeon. Pregnancy testing is recommended at least every four weeks while menstrual periods are absent. Appropriate contraception is advised during treatment for those who do not want to become pregnant or who have large adenomas.
