About Onureg
Overview
Onureg contains azacitidine, a medicine used for continued treatment of adults with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). It is for patients who reached their first complete remission, with or without full blood count recovery, after intensive induction chemotherapy and cannot complete intensive treatment intended to cure the disease. Azacitidine works by becoming part of cells’ DNA and RNA and blocking enzymes that modify them, changing gene activity and reducing protein production.
What it treats
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in adults for continued treatment after a first complete remission, including remission with incomplete blood count recovery, following intensive induction chemotherapy, when they cannot complete intensive treatment intended to cure the disease.

Side effects
Common side effects of Onureg include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tiredness or weakness, constipation, upper respiratory tract infections, pneumonia, stomach pain, joint pain, decreased appetite, fever with a low white blood cell count, dizziness, skin infections, and pain in the arms or legs. Serious side effects include reduced blood cell production (myelosuppression), fever with a low white blood cell count, and infections such as pneumonia. Contact your doctor if you develop a fever or signs of infection. Regular blood tests are needed to monitor blood cell counts. Depending on the severity, your prescriber may interrupt, adjust or stop treatment. Onureg can harm an unborn baby. Use effective contraception and contact your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Onureg if you have a known severe allergy to azacitidine or any of its ingredients. Onureg can suppress blood cell production. Regular complete blood counts are needed during treatment. Depending on the severity, your prescriber may pause, adjust or stop treatment. Onureg can harm an unborn baby. Effective contraception is needed during treatment. Do not breastfeed while taking Onureg. Onureg must not be substituted for other azacitidine products.

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
