About Nucala

Overview

Nucala contains mepolizumab, a monoclonal antibody medicine. It is used as add-on maintenance treatment for severe eosinophilic asthma in people aged 6 years and older, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps in adults, and inadequately controlled eosinophilic COPD in adults, not for sudden breathing symptoms. It also treats eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) in adults and hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) in people aged 12 years and older when HES has lasted at least six months without an identifiable non-blood-related secondary cause. It blocks a protein called IL-5, reducing the production and survival of eosinophils, cells involved in inflammation.

What it treats

- Add-on maintenance treatment for severe eosinophilic asthma in adults and children aged 6 years and older. - Add-on maintenance treatment for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps in adults aged 18 years and older. - Add-on maintenance treatment for inadequately controlled chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with an eosinophilic phenotype in adults. - Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) in adults. - Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) lasting at least 6 months in adults and children aged 12 years and older, without an identifiable secondary cause unrelated to a blood disorder. Not for relief of sudden airway narrowing or prolonged, severe asthma attacks.

Side effects

Common side effects vary by the condition being treated: • Asthma: headache, injection-site reactions, back pain and tiredness. • Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps: throat pain and joint pain. • COPD: back pain, diarrhoea and cough. • EGPA and HES: the most common side effects are similar to those reported in asthma. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have occurred after Nucala administration. Reactions may include swelling beneath the skin, narrowing of the airways with breathing difficulty, low blood pressure, hives or rash. Stop using Nucala and seek immediate medical help if an allergic reaction occurs. Shingles (herpes zoster) infections have also occurred in people receiving Nucala. Contact your doctor if you develop shingles. Your doctor may consider vaccination if medically appropriate.

When to call your doctor

- Seek immediate medical attention for trouble breathing or wheezing. - Seek immediate medical attention for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. - Seek immediate medical attention for hives or a rash after receiving Nucala.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Nucala if you have a history of an allergic reaction to mepolizumab or any of its other ingredients. Allergic reactions, including severe reactions such as anaphylaxis, have occurred after Nucala was given. These may include swelling, breathing difficulties, low blood pressure, hives or rash. Nucala must be stopped if an allergic reaction occurs. Shingles infections have occurred in people receiving Nucala. Shingles vaccination should be considered if medically appropriate. Do not stop oral or other systemic corticosteroids, or inhaled corticosteroids, suddenly when starting Nucala. Any reduction should be gradual and directed by your prescriber. Existing parasitic worm infections must be treated before starting Nucala. If an infection develops during treatment and does not respond to treatment for the parasite, Nucala must be stopped until the infection resolves.

Interactions

Formal drug interaction studies have not been performed with Nucala. The label does not identify specific drug, supplement or food interactions.
